Flash Fiction Friday: Requited

I really enjoyed writing this one!

Requited

Requited

She watched him talking in the light of the radio, his green eyes crinkling as he spoke about the future. She could feel her heart melting into molten lava as he traced her knuckles with his thumb, a silent inference that he wished she’d be apart of it too. Smiling to herself, she leaned her head back in the passenger seat, half-listening to his dreams, and half-reminiscing the past year as well.

400 days ago, she’d been as fleeting as a frightened dove. Everyone who loved her had begged her to dismiss her pessimistic and stubborn nature.

“Who knows?” they all had said, wistful gleams in their eyes, “he may be the one. Are you really going to pass that up?”

But there was only one person that could change her warped mindset about love. Taking in his ever-present grin, she squeezed his hand. Despite her resistance, he had taken a risk for her, something no one else had ever even entertained the idea of doing. After that, the rest was history.

And as he talked about what kind of house he wanted, and how he wanted his kids to have a dog, she echoed that silent message, guiding her own thumb across the back of his hand. It wasn’t until he was talking about the porch swing–where he’d overlook the fruits of his labor–that he confirmed it to be true, when “we” and “us” slipped into conversation.

He grew quiet for a moment, wiping his now clammy hand on his jeans before taking her hand again. Had he really just let his secret intentions slip?

He was never much for all the mushy romantic stuff. In fact,  he preferred to steer clear of it after exhausting his heart over the years. But slowly and surely, she’d crept over the walls he’d slaved over. He’d felt like a fool to be chasing her the way he had, until, that is, she came around. Catching her gentle smile in his peripheral vision, he brought her hand to his lips, saying nothing, but speaking volumes.

Neither of them expanded on the subject, simply stealing glimpses of the other the entire drive back to town, thanking the Lord above for the chances taken, and silent requited love.

  1. I can understand why you enjoyed writing this story. The mystery of human romantic love conquers so much, doesn’t it? And in writing/reading about it, we can lose some of our own fears. Thank you for a nice story!
