Author Interview with K.A. Emmons

KateEmmons
When she’s not hermiting away in her colorfully-painted home office writing her next science fiction, passionate story-teller and adventurer Kate Emmons is probably on the road for a surf or hiking trip, listening to vinyls, or going for a power run. Emmons’ debut novel The Blood Race is the first book in her YA science fiction/fantasy thriller series. Q1: What authors in your genre inspire you the most?

I’m actually not a big reader of fiction, and I’ve read virtually no “genre related” books, so I know very few authors. I write far more than I read, and when I do find time to read it’s almost always non-fiction. But I love practically anything by C.S. Lewis, and I would definitely say that he’s been a huge inspiration in my life.

Q2: What age were you when you completed your first manuscript? What advice do you have for first-time writers?

I was 11 when I completed my first manuscript. It was a huge milestone, and so it should be for any writer.

My advice to first-time writers would be: don’t give up. It’s really that simple. Don’t quit, don’t stop writing, don’t stop telling stories. Remind yourself why you started, be kind to yourself on the hard days, and work through it. The end result will be so, so worth it… so don’t give up on yourself when you’ve come this far. 🙂

Q3: What is your biggest writing distraction?

Probably messages and emails popping up on my phone, which is why it is usually locked away on mute in another room while I write. I’m a firm believer in discipline, so I try my best to identify distractions, eliminate them, and keep myself on track.

Q4: What does your writing zone look like?

My writing zone at the moment is being lost in my head in my cozy, colorfully painted office, with coffee and a soundtrack of Vermont rainfall pattering against my window. I often write at my parents house at their dining room table as well, which is where my sister and I have written together since we were young kids. So that’s definitely one of my favorite places to write.

Q5: Some authors are raised in writing families, and others are first generation writers. Do you come from a writing pack, or are you a lone wolf?

Good question. 🙂 While I’m definitely a lone wolf in almost every respect, my sister is an avid writer herself, so we’ve grown up constantly bouncing story ideas off each other and discussing our books with one another. My aunt also wrote stories when she was growing up, so that’s always been an inspiration to me as well.

As an author and blogger, my goal is to teach writers that there is a way to write realistic, thought-provoking, redemptive Christian fiction that honors God while not sugarcoating the realities of the world.
